CONTINUING EDUCATION

The educational purpose of APHA 2016 Annual Meeting & Expo is to offer professionals and practitioners the opportunity to enhance their knowledge, exchange information on best practices, and learn about the latest research and new trends in public health. Educational Objectives • To address the gap between public health practitioners’ knowledge and performance as it relates developing and implementing policies that demonstrate a collaborative approach to improving the health of all people. • To define the roles of the public health community in working together to promote health, equity, and sustainability as public health policies are developed and implemented. • To increase knowledge of the public health community to incorporate health, equity, and sustainability into specific policies, programs, and processes, and to embed health, equity, and sustainability considerations into government decision- making processes. • To identify best practices in developing and implementing health in all policies. • To improve the competencies of public health practitioners through skill-building. Learning Needs and Identified Gaps Through multiple mechanisms, including needs assessment surveys, the judgment of the APHA Education Board, and input from the Continuing Education Committee, APHA has identified a gap in public health practitioners’ competency in the area of developing and implementing policies that demonstrate a collaborative approach to improving the health of all people. The APHA Annual Meeting will address gaps in knowledge of the public health community to incorporate health and equity into specific policies, programs, and processes, and to embed health and equity considerations into government decision-making processes. Target Audience Policy makers, physicians, social workers, health educators, public and environmental health professionals, students, international, federal, state, county, and local health agency officials and staff, nurses and nurse practitioners, health care providers, school health personnel and teachers, managed care group personnel, personnel and faculty from academia, administration and research. Policy on Disclosure to Learners The APHA strives to ensure balance, independence, objectivity and scientific rigor in all of its educational programs. All planners, faculty members, moderators, discussants, panelist and presenters participating in this program have been required to disclose any real or apparent conflicts(s) of interest that may have a direct bearing on the subject matter of this program. This includes relationships with pharmaceutical companies, biomedical device manufacturers or other corporations whose products or services are related to the subject matter of the presentation topic. The intent of this policy is to identify openly any conflict of interest so that the attendees may form their own judgments about the presentation with full disclosure of the facts. In addition, faculty is expected to openly disclose any off-label, experimental and/ or investigational uses of drugs or devices in their presentation.

Commercial Interest A Commercial Interest Organization or Entity is described as any entity either producing, marketing, reselling, or distributing healthcare goods or services consumed by or used on patients or an entity that is owned or controlled by an entity that produces, markets, resells, or distributes healthcare goods or services consumed by or used on patients AND the content of the educational activity/session/ Institute or presentation includes these products or services. Commercial Bias Commercial bias is defined as the promotion of a specific proprietary business or commercial interest which influences the planning, content, presentation or evaluation of a CE credited educational activity. Disclosure of potential conflicts of interest related to financial relationships with business/commercial interest (as stated above) does not, in itself, mean that a commercial bias exists. To prevent any kind of bias, a provider must ensure that: 1) Decisions concerning the identification of learning needs, educational objectives, presenter selection, the presentation and the evaluation of content are free from any influence of a commercial interest; and 2) They are not required by a commercial interest to accept advice or services concerning faculty, authors, or participants or other education matters, including content and conditions of contributing funds or services. Obtaining Continuing Education Credits for other Disciplines APHA is not responsible for providing continuing education credit and/ or information for any discipline other than medicine, nursing, health education and public health. Check with your accrediting body to determine if CME for Non-Physicians will be accepted. CONTINUING EDUCATION ACCREDITATION STATEMENTS Continuing Medical Education (CME) The American Public Health Association (APHA) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Designation Statement: The APHA designated this live educational activity for a maximum of 30 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
